As a high school student, you are faced with a multitude of questions and options surrounding the planning of your future.  These are not easy decisions to make and it is therefore necessary to approach such issues only after researching your options.  A military career may be a great option for you, as long as you understand exactly what you are committing to.  Here are a few tips that may help you decided:

Plan out your goals.   Joining the military can be a great way to gain valuable work experience and also to earn a college degree.  Therefore, it is important that you carefully think out your goals before you sign on.  There are multiple branches in the military and a large variety of jobs in each branch.  You need to research each in order to know which is best for you.

Consult with a recruitment officer.  It is never too early in your high school career to consult with a military recruitment officer.  Not only can your recruitment officer give you advice and guidance when it comes to pursuing a post-high school military career, but he can also be a great source of support through your high school years.  If this is something you would like to pursue please contact your guidance counselor so you can be paired with a recruiter as early as possible to allow you to make an informed decision.

Study early and often for your ASVAB.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is the test you must take – and do well on – if you want to qualify for the military career path of your choice.  Fortunately for you, there are a number of great resources for studying and preparing to take the ASVAB.  Your counselor will be able to get you started with this information.  The sooner you begin, the better.

Know your options.  If your school offers ROTC, than considering joining.  This may give you an idea of what the military may be like.

Torn between heading to college and joining the military straight out of high school?  Well, there is an option that will allow you to pursue both.  By joining the Reserves, you can attend college and serve in the military on a part-time basis.  Ask your recruiter how.

There is a lot to consider when it comes to pursuing a military career after high school.  This is a serious commitment and one that should be thoroughly researched.

If you are truly interested in joining the military please speak with your high school counselor so you can be paired with a recruiter as early as possible.  This will make sure that you will have plenty of time to consider whether the military is the right decision for you.
