Frequently Asked Questions About Dual Credit

What is dual credit?

Dual credit is a process through which a student may earn high school credit for successfully completing a college course that provides advanced academic instruction beyond, or in greater depth than, the Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS) for  a corresponding high school course.  The "dual credit" earned is college credit and high school credit for one course.

Who is responsible for the content of a course offered for dual credit?

The dual credit courses are college courses, the college is responsible for the content.

Where are courses for dual credit taught?

Courses for dual credit at ITM are taught on the high school campus through a combination of online instruction and degreed teaching staff.  Students will receive their login information via email from St. Philip's College.  Courses can be accessed through the Blackboard.  Each student will have access to their coursework, assignment due dates, grades, etc.

Can any student enroll in college courses for dual credit?

Texas Administrative Code 4.85 (b) identifies the requirement which must be met by each student who enrolls in a college courses for dual credit.  Students must meet the passing TSI/ACCUPLACER scores in order to enroll in dual credit courses. 

 

College Readiness Classification scores:

ESSAY   5 

READING   945 (or less than 945 with diag of 5 or 6)

MATH   950  (or less than 950 with diag of 6)

How much high school credit is earned by a student who takes a college course?

The student can earn at least 0.5 credit toward a high school course for a one-semester college course.

Are grades in courses for dual credit weighted when calculating the student's high school grade point average (GPA)?

Yes

Who pays the cost for the dual credit courses?

Students at ITM complete dual credit courses, at no cost.

To begin the dual credit process:

​

  1.  You will need to complete an application for St. Philip's College (DUAL CREDIT).  Please do this at ApplyTexas.

       You will need to create an account first and then proceed to the My Applications and create a new 2 year application 

       for St. Philip's College, DUAL CREDIT

  2.  Complete the top portion of the dual credit registration form AND sign the student and parent area on the bottom.  

  3.  CHECK YOUR EMAIL DAILY (both ITM and St. Philip's).
